You can look up indexes to army pensioners on the PRO website - WO97 rings a bell. Ireland was part of Britain then so they could join the army like any other British citizen. MB |

Yes, there were lots of Irish born soldiers, RA and other Units based at Woolwich Garrison around the time you are looking at. Although my g.grandfather was in Canada in 1880 and married there. Good hunting Jan xx |

Ireland wasn't another country then - only became independent in 1920's I think |

Can anyone tell where i can search for a G/Grandfathers info? he was a seargent in the ROYAL ARTILLERY in 1871 on aroundabout, he survived and was a pensioned seargent in 1881 scottish census(he was irish)also could irishmen join the british army and be stationed here in those days?and where would the royal artillary be based?... anything would be helpful as i haven't a clue....MOE! |
