Thanks for your replies and help ladies. I've searched by full names, first names only, with a variety of locations for everything, even by 1st letter of the name. I even put fireman into the keywords box! I got excited when I saw a Catherine Brown (her maiden name) but that wasn't her either. I have their marriage cert from 1858. I'm not sure if the piece 145 covers Hackney or not, but none of the others on Sarah's list suggests Hackney is missing! I wish there was an occupation search option on Ancestry, like on the 1901! Ah well, I was hoping they might have other rellies living with them in 1861 to help me out a bit! I hate London research!!!! Thanks again, Julia |

If you want to see the list of places that Ancestry say are missing from the 1861 census, type in ''is this why'' into the search box on this board. That should bring up my thread, which is called (something like) ''Is this why you can't find your rellies in 1861??' Merry (alias Sarah) |

Hi Julia You're right I cant find them either!! Do you know for sure that Catherine and George were married in 1861? I thought perhaps that she may still be living under her maiden name somewhere? I do know that some pages are missing from the census....you may be the unlucky one. Somewhere on the GR site there is a list of the missing pages it might be worth a look. Anyway I hope you eventually fid them. Goodluck Suzanne |

Found this which has some of the people you mention, and a few more!!! John Palmer 36 General Dealer b. Hackney Elizabeth Palmer 28 b. Hackney John 11 Charles 9 Joseph 7 Elizabeth 5 ditto Henry 4 Mary Ann 2 George 3 months living at Church Terrace, Hackney RG9/159 Folio 116 p59 Later... Looking at your George Palmer in the 1871 census, I see that this isn't his family, even supposing that he and his wife had decideded to use other names! Hackney was crawling with Palmers in 1861. There are so many baby George Palmers , and none of them with a father named George!!! Have you done this the hard way, and looked at each census page for Hackney in 1861? It rather looks like they have been mistranscribed. I read somewhere on this site that there are pages missing from each census too. good luck, Lesley |

I have searched every way I can think of for George and Catherine Palmer in 1861. So in defeat I turn to you guys, who seem to find the impossible within minutes!! I'm looking for: George Palmer abt 26 a fireman from Hackney, wife Catherine abt 20 from Clapton or Hackney Daughter Elizabeth abt 4 from Clapton or Hackney and possibly George born in early 1861, Hackney They should be in Hackney, but like I say, they have me beat! I did find an Elizabeth aged 4 living with her Grandparents in Hackney, but it's not her. |
