Thanks for the reply, I would not have thought to approach the Archdeconary of Richmond about the Banns Book, or to try the LDS site. You have been very helpful and I will try both of these suggestions. I have already had experience of the speed of the Lancashire Record office, it took them over 3 weeks to reply to my e-mail and their phone service was as slow as you say so I will try them as a last resort. Thanks again Daisy |

Daisy In my experience, Banns Books can be anywhere! I have recently found one tucked into the middle of a Parish Register - the Vicar was obviously too lazy to copy out the details twice, so just stuck the book in. I'm glad he did, because it shows a few interesting things - Banns called but no marriage actually taking place, and as each set of Banns had a whole page to itself, he let loads of witnesses sign - some have upto 20 signatures, which was EXTREMELY helpful in sorting out who was who. If you know the name of the Church, you could look on the LDS website to see if they have filmed the register. If you then go to 'Film notes' it may tell you if the Banns Book is on there too. Alternatively, google for the Church - again it may tell you where the records are. Failing all that, you could email Lancs Records Office - they are usually quicker to respond to an email than a letter, and a phone call will only increase your knowledge of Greensleeves - I gave up after 40 minutes! Whichever way you choose, they do not work fast. Because Lancs is my area of research, I happen to know that at one time, Clitheroe came under the Ecclesiastical attentions of Accrington, so you might find something there, if all else fails. Olde Crone DOH! Just remembered, Clitheroe was also, and maybe still is, sometimes found under the splendidly named records 'The Western Deaneries of the Archdeaconry of Richmond'. Richmond of course, is in Yorkshire, but their power extended over large areas of Lancashire. It is this fact, I think, which sometimes led my ancestors to declare that they were born in Clitheroe, YORKSHIRE. Have a look at A2A site to see how to get hold of these records - they are not held by Lancs RO, but are still held by the Archdeaconry. |

Hi, Does anyone know if Banns Books for a Cof E wedding which took place in 1802 in Clitheroe would be held at the County Record Office in Preston. I am trying to trace a marriage of 5 x gt grandparents. From 1851 the census I thought they were both born in Burnley then I discovered Betty on 1861 census was born in Silsden Yorks. The only marriage entry I can find which seems to fit is the Clitheroe one in 1802. I'm just not sure it relates to my ancestors and also I don't know why they would marry in Clitheroe if they lived in Burnley/Silsden any suggestions please? |
