Im trying to trace my Atcliffe family. I've found a family called Atliff in 61 who are a possible. In 71 they are under Hatcliff and it is a different much younger wife. Thats ok as maybe the first wife died. The problem is in 61 there is a daughter Mary aged 15. Then in 71 there is a Mary aged 11. Was it likely to have 2 daughters with the same name or do you think I have the wrong family? Im so confused with all the different spellings of the surname. Carole

It seems unlikely in this case because the second Mary would have had to be born before the first one died, but she could be a step-daughter, couldn't she? They often took their step-father's name. Also, Mary Ann was sometimes considered a different name from Mary, so I have seen families where there was a Mary and a Mary Ann (but Mary Ann is often abbreviated to Mary A. on censuses). Also Mary could be the middle name or nickname of one or other rather than her real name. I think it will be easier to work it out if you put up some more details of the entries you have found so people can have a look. Kate.

I would guess that they were probably the same William (despite different birthplaces on the two censuses). There is a son William who ties in (1 and 11). Given that in 1871 there is a daughter also aged 11, I figure that she was a daughter of his 2nd wife, Mary before she met William. Ideally, the two Mary's (mother and daughter) should be in Bolingbroke in 1861 but I can't see them. The first Mary was buried 28 Oct 1863 (18) Charlotte 9 Jul 1863 (43) Mary (wife) 8 Sep 1876 (36) William 27 April 1895 (80)

Geoff Thanks very much for that. At least I have dates for their deaths. I did wonder if the son William and daughter Mary in the 71 census were twins but in 81 there is a years difference in age. Carole

There is a marriage on Ancestry between William Atcliff and Mary Harrison Sep 1867 Spilsby Lincolnshire vol 7a p 889 (or should I say, those are the only two names listed for that vol and page combination - there could be 2 more not yet transcribed). Spilsby included Bolingbrooke. (Hope I've spelt that right!) I can't cut and paste it from FreeBMD because I just keep getting Server too busy. Kate.

Haven't got as far as trying to compare families, but - have you seen this site: http://s10.freefronthost.*com/mi/ (remove *) Lincolnshire 1837-1850 Marriage Indexes These marriage indexes contain the names of bride and groom, their fathers, full date and the name of the parish. All information is transcribed from the parish registers deposited at the Lincolnshire Archives (registers that have not been deposited at Lincolnshire Archives are therefore not included). The indexes do not contain any Register Office marriages, and there are few non-conformist marriages at present. Please read the introduction first as this contains more information on what has been transcribed for each registration district. All indexes are in Microsoft Excel format (to save a local copy select File->Save As from you browser menu). The index files are 300-600Kb in size so will take 1-2mins to download over dial-up.
