Some records dealing with the care of the poor administration of the Poor House for South Stoneham parish are within the South Stoneham > church parish records (PR 9). These include a vestry book 1711-1745, > vestry minutes 1821-1894 and overseers of the Poor account books 1677-1740 (with some gaps). There are various disbursement books covering 1717-1835 (again, with gaps), three out relief books covering 1820-1835, a settlement examination book covering 1778-1782, a day book > with some entries relating to the Poor House 1800-1808, and returns of indoor and outdoor poor for Sep 1855, Sep 1857 and Mar and Sep 1858. > We hold some rate books for South Stoneham parish (under reference > D/ASS). > > A guide called 'Poor Law in Hampshire through the Centuries' published by the Hampshire Archivists' Group in 1970 lists some South Stoneham Union records held by the Hampshire Record office: > Overseers receipts and payments: Botley, Bursledon, Hedge End, West End > Monthly statements: Bursledon, Hound, Hedge End > Collection and deposit books: Botley, Bursledon, Hamble, Hedge End, West End > Unfortunately, we were unable to tell from the guide what dates they covered. We often suggest HRO if we can't help, especially in regard to South Stoneham. South Stoneham Union covers > many parishes which fall outside our covering area, hence it is a grey area in terms of coverage. If you are interested in conditions in the Workhouse, you might like to have a look at 'Half a Loaf: The Care of the Sick and Poor of South Stoneham 1664-1948' by Eric H Raffo, published by the Friends of Moorgreen Hospital 2000. If you are interested in visiting to look through the parish records covering up to 1835, or in checking the pre-1841 South Stoneham Union Minutes then we are open to the public Tues-Fri, 9.30-4.30 and are located in the basement of the South Block of the Civic Centre, Southampton. ann Glos
