I would send them to a Transcriber and enter them all as Butterbur! Lol Seriously though, I have always followed the convention that I use the spelling in the earliest record, which, of course, is normally the name recorded on the birth record . Then any variations they used would be put into their notes. I have 9 variations of my Surname in 12 generations, so there is no definitive spelling that I can claim as yet.

I'd put them as potter but with a note saying which name they took on when married.

I have a family that some of them are Potter and some Potter-Bond .all the same relies from the same family , Some were registerd Potter some Potter -bond and when some of them got married they just used Potter but the others just used Bond or potter-bond . HOW WOULD YOU ADD THEM TO YOUR TREE ? Would you put them all as potter ?
