How can i find out the maiden name of my ggfathers second wife. She became Rebecca Nicholson and they lived in Sculcoates near Hull. She came from Broomfleet and brought her son with her his name was John Wekes born Broofleet1868 |

If you get their marriage cert it should have her dad's name on it, which would usually be her maiden surname! Is this it? Marriages Dec 1877 FORDHAM Henry Howden 9d 191 Franklin Elizabeth Howden 9d 191 >>Nicholson Benjamin Howden 9d 191 >>WOKES Rebecca Howden 9d 191 Merry |

They are the GRO reference numbers you need to order certificates. These cost 7 pounds with this ref number and can be ordered online on GROs website Deborah |

The numbers refer to the Volume and Page number that is used by the GRO (General Register office) to find their copy of the marriage certificate. Howden is the Registration District. You will need these details should you decide to order a copy of the cert from the GRO. You can do this online with a credit card at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0 Cost is £7 I did notice there was another child on that 1881 census. Was he/she the child of Rebecca or was Ben Nicholson previously married? I only ask because I wondered if the Wekes/Wokes - Nicholson marriage should be earlier?? Re her son, John George Wekes: I couldn't find a birth registration. Wekes doesn't seem to be a valid surname, so I expect it should be Wokes, though this is rare. Birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1875, so perhaps he wasn't registered? Merry |

Births Mar 1845 WHOAKES Rebecca Howden 23 65 Searched freebmd for Rebeccas born 1844/1845 in the Howden district which covers Broomfleet and this is the only one that came up. Seems too much of a coincidence on WOKES. So perhaps she had a son young out of wedlock! and was too embarassed to register him Deborah |

Thanks everyone. Benjamin was married to a Harriet Kell and had some children. When she died he married the house keeper who was Rebecca. She had a son and i thought his surname was Wekes (It said so on the1991 census) but it was pobably mis-spelt. They went onto have a child Maud Nicholson. I think John was born out of wedlock |

You might also find this site useful... http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk It hasn't got those records mentioned above - Beverley not fully transcribed yet, but it's pretty good on Sculcoates. Christine |
