Kaz, All events post 1837 are indexed. The searchable database on Freebmd, which Ancestry also uses, is a transcription of the indexes being undertaken by volunteers. Hopefully one day the 20th century events will be transcribed but I think the reasoning was that these more recent events can often be traced by asking living members of the family and its the older ones which people most often want to search. Ancestry also has the GRO's digitised indexes of events post 1984 .

that applies to 1837-they have the same data for those deaths eg someone born 1912 and who dies 1994-youll have full birth date,month of death,all the relevant code refs,and location at death

I believe Ancestry has more up-to-date civil registration for Deaths, which also comes up with the persons date of birth if born after 1900. Kathy

check the area if known eg. Cheshire bmd have transcribed up to 1960-with abasic year by year scan-no refs-once youve found a few positives check them on 1837. Cambridge-awesome-20 year scan for a bmd does soundex aswell-up to present day-look for Camdex another method-pick an area you think they lived-say Oxford-you suspect they lived there in 1930-check gores index for head of household-if the name is there it will give an address-look up an address given in the electoral role to see who the other adults are-if the head is there and in previous years,track back until the year that the first women appear-that way you can work out what year they were born- ie say mrs bloggs appears for the first time in 1919,youll know that she was roughly born in 1889,as long as you know the family were there in the house the previous few years. mrs bloggs appears for the first time in 1929,again ,if they ve been there previous years,she must be 21,and therefore born approx 1908
