I have just received a death cert. dated 1890. the age is recorded as 68 years. then there is a correction in the margine that reads ...................for 68 read 66 corrected 23rd April 1890 by me, G J Year, registrar on production of a statutory declaration made by Edward John Staning and Arthur Staning.... Just curious as to why make this amendment when the difference in age is so small ! ( I've had bigger mistakes on death cert. relating to ages) Does anyone have any ideas.........or could it simply be that his sons wanted it recorded correctly ! Esta

Maybe they had to produce the death certificate to claim some insurance or pension benefits or whatever, and the bureaucrats at the receiving end refused to accept it as the age at death didn't tally with what they had in their records? Kate.

Kate's suggestion sounds the best bet. Otherwise, might just be highly pedantic relations you have!! (family row - ''he was 68''.....''no he wasn't, I say 66''....etc) Merry

Kate / Merry.... I did think along those lines.............but would a wheelwright have had pension/insurance ?........not sure ...... his children were adults and his wife had died 20 years before......just semed a bit odd as I've never had an amendment before on a cert. Perhaps I'm jusr looking for soemthing that's not there !!! Esta :)

He might have had a policy to cover funeral and headstone costs. You will have to find out if he had a twenty foot high monument on his grave!! Merry
