Have you got your great grandfather's birth certificate? This will have both parents on it and will enable you to go back further. Sam x |

This is from the Getting Started section that you can find by following links from the homepage. 'English and Welsh General Registration started on 1 July 1837. The records establish individuals in the context of precise dates, places and occupations: birth records give parents' names and marriage records ages and father's names and death certificates give ages and, from 1969, places of birth. They are indexed per quarter year at the Family Records Centre at 1, Myddleton Street, London EC1R 1UW (0208 392 5300), www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc. Websites such as freebmd.rootsweb*com contain partial indexes to the records but, if you do not find what you want on websites, search the original indexes. Beware that certificates may contain variant spellings, deliberately altered ages and exaggerated occupations. ' Hopefully, the details you want are pre 1909. If not, or if the information is not on freebmd, then you can use the 1837online website (which you have to pay to use) or microfiche in the larger libraries. Good luck! |

If you know approx year and town, you can search free at freebmd. It's not completely transcribed, but you may be lucky. Have you looked on census sites to find details? |
