Having traced my GTx3 to a marriage in the village of Shotwick in Cheshire, I now intend to look in Chester RO through the parishes for his birth. I have made a list of the parishes that ARE covered by the LDS since I will look at these last but this thought has struck me. On the list of parishes, will they be all the parishes of Cheshire. In other words if a parish is not covered does he list them anyway? Looking for a way of checking which ones there were. Many thanks Jeanie

If you go to Genuki that will list Cheshire parishes. Hugh Wallis only covers ones on LDS as if they aren't there, there's no batch number to search on. If you google 'Hugh Wallis batch numbers' you can click on Cheshire and search by clicking on the batch number for each parish. Even parishes which are covered aren't covered for all periods and I do know that a lot of baptisms are only girls' names. nell

Hi Helen, Yes, I thought I might have to do that. Was hoping for a short cut having just copied down all the places that are covered. After lunch will copy down all the places he has which are not covered by date and cross check with the wonderful GENUKI. It has been one of my most helpful sites. Many thanks for reply. Jeanie

Hi June, I have had a look at that site recently. I do find their dates hard to fathom. Am I correct in thinking that if it says 6761221 it means 21/12/1676? They do seem to have people not on the LDS but till I have worked out the dates I cant make sense of info. Thanks for reply.

Joyce a) if you can't find parish records online you have to find them in county records offices. b) how do you know you have the right one? Well if you have relies with unusual names who always stayed in the same village you can probably be sure. But if like me you find relatives moved from parish to parish and had ordinary names and married spouses with ordinary names and then had children named after themselves and their parents, it is much harder. Which is why I haven't gone much beyond 1800 in my tree. nell
