I have done this to and try to buy a copy of a certificate nearest the census date that way you have the address to check out the census details. Good Luck Irene

I had to do this for my GGPx2 as they had not registered my Great Grandad but had registered his youngest bro and sis. Well worth it - yes definitely get it.

If you get a cert for one of the children born after your ancestor and then you are able to trace the parents marriage and it is before the birth of your ancestor, you should be doing OK!! Merry

Hi, thanks for the advice. Nell, gt grandfather's name was John Jackman born South Manchester 1856. Parents were Elizabeth & George Jackman. George born 1803 Longford Middlesex and Elizabeth born 1817 Peckhamm surrey. Geprge was an Engine Driver. john was 1 of 7 children and a kind member found his 3 of his siblings birth details for me, but couldn't find John either. Regards Lou

The only think you would have to consider is whether you can be certain they both had the same mother? Apart from that, it's the best way of getting round the missing cert. Some birth registrations didn't get recorded by the GRO (in error). If you know that all the children were born in the same district and know when the missing cert should have been issued (roughly) it MAY be possible to get the local registrars office to take a look for you, in case they have it but the GRO does not...... Assuming that you are sure that the brother and your gt grfather shared both the same parents, yes. I'd choose a sibling whose birth is nearest your gt grfather's as its most likely that the address and fathers' occupation will be the same as for your gt grfather. But perhaps before you do that, we could have another scout round for your gt grfather - roughly when and where was he born and have you looked through the GRO indexes/applied to the local register office for a search? nell

Hi Lou I've had to do this once or twice tio get the mother's maiden name, I couldn't find my direct rellies details so had to go for a brother or sister. Sometimes it is the only way. Sam x

Hi, I can't find my Gt Grandfather's birth details, a kind member found some of his siblings birth details. Should I get the brother's birth certificate so that could link me to his parents? Help appreciated, Lou
