Ann, the nearest I could find was: John Quin, born 1860, Co. Durham Tyne and Wear volume 10a, page 468 Do not know if this is him, but could not find another John Quinn for the date you mentioned. Elizabeth

Do you have a marriage cert for him, with father's name and occupation?? If you do, then it may be possible to find him on the census. Birth reg wasn't compulsory until about 1875. Merry

FreeBMD shows John Quinn for - March 1862, or June 1861 or Dec 1860 all registered at Gateshead, co Durham. How sure are you of the date and born in Sunderland? The other option is the laborious one of checking the card index at the local Library or wherever. As you know his father's name, you could try the Gateshead Registry office for the birth cert. If it doesn't refer, they will send your cheque back.

thnks for ur reply on the marriage certificate it says he is 21 at time of marriage going back itll be 1863 when he was born i had a quick look on the bdm and the only one i could find was 1860 so if i got intouch with sunderland register office and asked do u think they will comfirm johns dad? before i order a certificate for him

Not saying you have found the wrong birth reg, but if he said he was 21 at marriage I would doubt he was actually older than that!! More likely to have lied about being ''of age'' and was actually younger! Yes, you can ask for a ref check on his dad's name when ordering the birth cert. If you can do this throught the local reg office they MAY not charge you if it's the wrong cert, whereas the GRO charge about half the £7 for looking! Good Luck Merry
