Hi My gg grandad went AWOL from the BOAR war and joined the foreign legion, promptly changing his name. is there anywhere to look for soldiers who went AWOL? I only have a vague idea of what his name was before as my nan cant really remember |

It might be a bit of a long shot what with foreign legion, but you could try putting his name into the National Archives online catalogue search to see if they have anything obvious. Whilst the NA/PRO has microfilmed records of WW1 soldiers (with the odd record of a captured deserter!), they also have paper/boxed copies of soldiers records pre-dating that and filed by regiment ... the latter being the challenge usually! What do you think? Regs Jane |
