Many Brits were in India during the 2nd half of the 19th Century. here is a good Website for starters. http://www.worldstatesmen.org/India_BrProvinces.htm . If anyone has any others covering the British Empire or the East India Company please list below. |

Lateral thinking sometimes helps. GG Grandfathers' siblings disappear into that black hole. Miraculously, a nephew turned up on the 1881, lodging with GG Grandfather's sister in law, a widow living on an annuity. The annuity suggested a legacy. Lo and behold, though her husband died in Calcutta, his will was proved in London! It is always worth checking Documents Online and the Principal Probate Registry for wills of those who died abroad. Even humble sailors appear in the PCC because they died 'in foreign parts' |
