If anyone is trying to search for ancestors in Scotland then i highly recommend www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. This website gives you census records from 1871 - 1901, Birth records from 1553 - 1954, Death records from 1855 - 1954 and Marriage records from 1553 - 1929. This website also has information on wills and testiments. The census records are great as this gives you the names, ages and professions of people living in the house at that time, i have found information on my family dating back to the 1600's through this website alone. Good Luck. Jilly

I know Jilly I have used the site myself as my dad's side is Scottish, Norwegian and Swedish and they moved to Scotland where my dad was born and I was born, I just wish the people who do the English site will pick up how good the site is and do the same with the English one as my mum's side is English

Isle of Lewis will be on Scotland's People. Great site - got back to 1789 marriage very easily including census and wills information. 1789 marriage however was only a copy of the parish register of banns, ie no info. re parents. OPR records are ok if your ancestors were in the Established Church but you should get to 1855 no problem. £6 gets you 30 credits. that is one credit to see index and 5 credits to see details on individual entry. Helps if you start with accurate name, date.
