I have found on the scotlands people web site, details of the birth of my gt grandmother - yippee:-) I have also received a copy of the banns for her parents marriage, but unfortunately these banns dont give me any other information:-( how would I go about tracing her fathers birth when I dont have a parents details to set me off? My Gt Grandmother was born in 1854 the same year that her parents married:-)....Bev X

If you go on Scotlandspeople put her birth in it may give the parents names beside her name as it is before 1855 it will not give certificate you may have to order it. If she died in Scotland her death certificate if you know what her married name was it will give certificate after 1855 and will give parents names then try and judge it from there

Val I've got her parents details, and also their marriage details from the Scotlands People site. It's just going that stage further and getting their birth details as I have found several James Carruthers of around the right age, but not having a marriage certificate with a fathers name I've nothing to tell me which one is correct:-( Bev X

Bev, I would search for parents death certificate. In Scotland this will give deceased age , & the name of spouse and parents. If you have any census returns indicating his place of birth you should be able to go back to the OPR for birth details.

If they died after 1855 you will find them on scotlandspeople and they will give parents names, wife's name, who signed death certificate and what they died off
