Does anyone know what a 'Spittle Tree Maker' is please. It is on the 1871 census in Shropshire. I have Googled it and looked it up in all my books but have found nothing. |

Google finds a couple of references on censuses - in one 'spade' is written over spittle. A spit is a spade's depth of soil. So probably something to do with spades ... |

Thanks very much. Perhaps a combination of the two. The maker of wooden shafts for a spade. |

Greeting’s...Jill I think it maybe to do with “ The Spit “ re Spit Roast. It's either the ends of the spit which hold the spit up called trees ? Or it’s a frame placed to the side of the fire Shaped as a tree with hooks coming out at various heights Where joints of meat could be cooked ? all the above work could come under a Blacksmith's job MIKE. |

Hi I'm told that a spit is a spade-depth of earth, so you are on the right lines. |
