Can anyone help please? I am trying to find an ancestor of mine called THOMAS BREWER - I have asked for help regarding this man before, but I now have some new information that might help..... He was apparently on the SS BAYANO as a Merchant Seaman during the 1930's - I have tried to find a website that has names of men on this ship, but haven't been successful. Tom may have been HENRY (or James Henry) really - Tom being a nickname? He was apparently in the Royal Navy during the 1st WW (no idea what ship) and joined the Admiralty Police in the 2nd - apparently in Bath? He claimed to have been from LYNTON in DEVON, but I have found no record of this, and would have been born circa 1880. It isn't much to go on I know - I keep on pestering my Dad to try and remember more, but this is all he's got right now. Are there any sites where I can search the names of crewmen? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really lost on where to look or what to do next. Thanks Kaye x |

Kaye, cant remember the site now, but there is one for merchant seamen - perhaps try googling. I know my Grandad was a merchant seaman but they were sort of requisitioned into the royal navy at the outbreak of war because of there obvious experience. I had someone look my Grandad up at Kew and they sent me a copy of his ID card (looking unnervingly like Hitler!) and his medal list for WW1. Later I got my mums birth cert and low and behold, it gave his ships name which was a great help. |

The message above suffered from GR's e-mail address suppression. I googled the name & ship's name and found the site: http://www.m-navydays.*com/newpages/postings.htm (remove *) and the address is: j.baister [e-mail symbol] btinternet.*com (remove *) Christine |

Thanks everyone for the replies - I will take a look at the websites suggested and try emailed the chap mentioned. It's going to be difficult to find him I think, as I know so very little aobut him - he used a few different names and no one seems sure about where he was from! I think he must have had a few skeletons in his closet - but I'm dying to know what they were! lol Thanks again for the help. Kaye x |
