I ordered a copy of a newspaper article I found in the index on this site some time back. They were prompt in sending what I had ordered and it contained a brilliant description of the person, who had received a long service award for his police career. I probably could have found the article myself by trawling through papers in the archives and paying for photocopying but I would probably never have known to look in the archive and in any case the cost of travel would have to be added on.

Hi Bev The info itself seems perfectly genuine. The site mentions my grandfather as being in a photo and also mentions the man he joined up with in WW1. There is also reference to a relly in the Black Sheep Index. There are also details re this man on the Times Digital site. I've been too lazy to order anything myself, but lots of respectable sites appear to have links to it and I have found one(!) recommendation from a user.

bev, ive just had a look and to be honest it convinced me! even though none of my rellies were listed, i think i would be tempted if they were! let us know how much they are and how you get on! to anyone who has a rellie on the railways/police or 1st/2nd world wars take a look ...MOE!

Nell Thanks for that:-) I put brackets everywhere as 'better safe than sorry':-) I can see what you mean though so I'll give it a go next time. Moe Of the three pieces that I have found, one says that it's a presentation, one a biography with photo and the other is an obituary. This chappie was in the Police force and I know he was presented with a silver coffee service on his retirement in 1901 as my mum still has it:-) and all the dates tie in prefectly. It's just that if I'm not going to recieve anything, then I'd be better keeping my cash for certificates:-) Thanks for your input though ladies:-) Bev X

Bev, the best way to find out about whether the site is real or not is to put a made up name in(your sons or husband) and see if it says they have photos of him, if everyone you put in comes back as having photos/info on them, then you know its a con, i might have a look myself Good Luck MOE!

Without knowing the details I can't give info, have not used this site much. If your ancestor has an uncommon name or other things that convince you this is him, then it probably is. By the way, you don't have to put brackets infront/after every dot in a webpage address, just when the dot is in front of com, co or net. So you can type www.familysearch.org or www.lightage.demon*co*uk/ nell

about my Gt Grandfather on www(.)lightage(.)demon(.)co(.)uk. Has anybody used this site before and can you recommend it please? There are three things listed that I'm 99% certain relate to my ancestor but would value your opinions before I send off my cash:-) TIA..........Bev X
