birth cert for 1817 where would i find

samual lee my gggrandfather born woking in 1817 married jane waterer in 1837 on the cert there was no fathers name have looked on the IGI and may have found his birth with his mother Jane Lee put down as parents no father an unmarried mother where would i look now as this Lee line seems to be going no where

There weren't birth certificates in 1817. Registration started in 1837. You will have to look in parish registers for a baptism record, but if he was illegitimate, then you could look to see if there was a bastardy bond naming his father. It is always possible that the father was named on the baptism record, but not likely. Kath. x

Presumably the IGI entry will tell you where to find the parish record of his baptism, but if no father's name is given in the IGI it is probable that the father's name isn't in the parish register either. It would be worth checking, though. Kate.
