Why would someone born and living in Wiltshire lie on the census and say they came from Pontypool glamorgan? Thi s happened on the 1861 and 1871 census? Anyone any bright ideas? Kim

Maybe that persons sibling were born in Pontypool so they thought they were too? Is it definitely the correct person you are looking at? Some people are born in one place and brought up in another and they sometimes forget this. Or most likely, the enumerator was deaf or just plain stupid! Cheers, Lynn

How do you know they were born in Wilts? Have you got their birth certificate? Maybe they lied about being Wiltshire-ish. If it is wrong, perhaps the person concerned wasn't the one giving the enumerator the details. Another household member could have mistakenly believed the person was Welsh.

He was born in county 1841 and is on the PR as being baptised there. I suppose there is a slight possiblitiy he coud have been born at relatives house then moved back to Wilts in time for baptism.... He was sent to Devizes house of correction in 1827 for leaving his family dependent on 'the parish'. Sounds like a nice bloke!! I don't think it is the enumerator unless it was the same one for 1861 and again in 1871....In 1851 he is born in wilts?...... Curious as his daughter has 'loads' (6) illegit children too.... Kim
