HI just found out in 1871 my husbands gr.grandfather Charles Waight born 1834 was a sailor in the R.N.on H.M.YATCHT wondered if anybody could point me in the right direction for information . Regards Christine |

hi Christine, I have found a Charles Waight in 1871 census, born Southsea 1829 based in Plymouth and he is a quarter master. Could this be him? Gloria |

1881 ????? it says he was a naval instructor, but surname spelt differently. Hi Gloria Yes thats him thanks i have his son Edwins birth certificate as he is my husbands grandad.Never looked at it properly just put it in folder as i was doing my tree at the time,then looked at it today and saw on it he was seaman on H.M.Yatcht.Can not believe i missed that ,but now dont know where to go from here,any ideas Regards Christine |

Christine - the National Archives Documents Online are in the process of putting navy records on so you can download them. But I can't see Charles on there yet. If you try in a few weeks perhaps there will be something about him on there? Kate. |

Gloria Looking on my husbands tree the family seem to be mostly navy except from my husbands immediate line from his grandad.So would like to find out when Charles Waight was on H.M.Yacht and other ships and his eldest son also Charles born 1865 was in Navy he was on the training ship IMPLACABLE in 1881 aged 16.Me knowing nothing about the forces am at a loss. It was my first reaction to suggest the Docs Online Seamen's Register stuff - already found a handful of my/our lot. I put just the surname in and came up with just two: Name Waight, John Henry Official Number: 66789 Place of Birth: Portsmouth, Hampshire (DoB)1848 ADM 188/47 and Name Waight, Edward Official Number: 48458 Place of Birth: Birmingham, Warwickshire (DoB)1834 ADM 188/19 Did Charles have a younger bro, Edward, who also went to sea?? Trouble is, that's a big time-gap, while the nearer date was born in Warks. Christine |

Thanks for looking unfortunately i do not know who Charles waights parents were or if he had brothers and sisters YET.Hope to find out once i get a bit more info on the family i should think there is a good chance they are navy as he also has a son Charles born 1865 who was in Navy in 1881 onwards.
