How can I find a soldier on the 1871 census?

You need to know what 'mob' he was in really to see if they were abroad at the time. I mean, he may have just been in Ireland. I suppose the place she is staying is no help as her bro may not have lived near the barracks. You could look up any barracks in the area of his birth as most of them seemed to have joined the nearest regiment. |

I've had a look on ancestry for 1871 and can't see any likely candidates really. I don't *think* there were any wars on then. I think he fathered a child in 1876 (Alexander) so he must have come back from wherever he was! There is however doubt over my Great Grandfather Arthur's parentage (b 1881) - Richard isn't listed as his father, its blank, grrr! Family rumour has it that he was away a lot and so not sure I should even be really tracing this line! Would like to find him all the same! Sharon |

It depends where he was - if he is in the Army Barracks then he should still show on the census. If he was away at war, he won't. My history is not good so I don;t actually know if there were any wars going on in 1871! Sam x |

Hello all! I have an Ann Gifford aged 26 on the 1871 census living with her brother. She is married and down as a soldiers wife but no sign of her husband Richard Gifford (they married 10 Nov 1866). Anyone any idea how I can find Richard please? Thanks Sharon |
