Hi I am searching the family tree (lindsay) right through to my Gr Grandad were all Scots, Now I find my Gr Gr Grandad Matthew Lindsay was born in Ireland. Was there any particular area in Ireland the Scots went to after the Jacobite Clearance. Hope someone can help Or I'm up against a brick wall Thanks Mary |

Hi Mary, during the Highland clearances, most of the Scots cleared from the land, to make way for sheep, immigrated to Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand. There was also the potato blight which caused famine and hardship in both the Scottish Highlands and Ireland. There has however, always been a steady stream of Scots, more from Lowland Scotland, who made their way to Northern Ireland, they were known as The Ulster Scots. Here is a website that might give you some more information about it. http://www.ulsterscotssociety.*com/about.html Christine |
