I have a death certificate on an ancestor of mine ,he died aged23yrs old from Typhoid Fever. Under occupation is the word Puddler. Does anyone know what this is please? The year is 1877.

Puddler Wrought iron or clay worker - see Iron Puddler & Clay Puddler Iron Puddler Made wrought iron using the puddling process. Clay Puddler Made the waterproof clay lining used on canals and dams. Typhoid fever is a water born disease so may be it was an occupational hazard.

I've dozens of puddlers in my tree, they were all in the iron industry.

Hi I have puddlers in my familytree and they all worked on farms....I found this on another website:Puddling completely breaks down soil structure to decrease water percolation and to bury weeds. It loosens soil for greater ease of leveling. Rotovators can be used for puddling: another angle for you to think about. Hope this helps Lindypoos
