I have a birth in 1861 for James. On the 1861 census, he is down as aged 1month, but called Henry. Then in 1871, he is James again. Is this possible/probable?

Tracey I think it is quite possible. I have a rellie who is Catherine on one census then Matilda on another (you posted on my thread earlier about this). I also have a ggrandfather who was Michael on his birth cert, John Michael on his marriage cert and one or other on census. Maybe they couldn't make their minds up what to call him - LOL! Lynne

Lynne, thanks. However, my James doesn't have a middle name (or at least, it's not on the birth registration). I think this is one of those 'I wish I'd never started' ones lol It doesn't help that his mother had him and 4 siblings out of wedlock, and they're all down as a different surname after she married lol

Henry and Harry are interchangeable but not normally James, do you have the birth certificate? It is possible he could have been named Henry James or James Henry, if he had been given both names, then it is possible he could have been shown using either. You are more likely have different people, try looking for births and deaths. Jennifer

Jennifer, there are no deaths. There is a Henry born in 1859, but that is too early for him to be one month old in 1861. Plus James' sister was born in 1859, in a different month. I have the birth record for James. There is no middle name.

I've had this problem with the census too. It threw me for a long time but have come to the conclusion that it was a clerical error. My Henry became a Thomas for one census and was always Henry again on certs and other censuses. I checked for the Thomas born the same year in the same place and never found him so decided that it must have been the enumerator forgetting the right name as he turned the page from the rest of the family or perhaps he couldn't read his own notes. I've also had a Laura become a Louisa according to the enumerator - not Ancestry for a change! Sheila

Sheila thanks. That gives me hope :) Jess, no I don't have the actual cert. He's only 1st cousin 3 times removed and I can't afford to buy certs for each of the 3500 people I'm related to lol
