I received a certificate yesterday from the G.R.O. of the marriage of my great grandfather to my greatgrandmother it has no parents of the groom. It is signed with an X and the brides fathers occupation is Gentleman I know that my G.G F. was Italian and probably could not speak any English.also he was 30 years old.Does this seem normal.

I was told and I don't know how true it is but if they were classed as gentleman it meant just that and he probably didn't work, his family would probably be wealthy enabaling to live a gentlemans life. Angie PS.yes it seems normal I have a rew certs that are marked with an X,this meant they couldn't write to sign there name. I have just found this on a list of occupations. GENTLEMAN a member of the gentry, a descendant from an aristocratic family whose income came from the rental of his land

Hi Will, what do you wonder is normal or not? What was the grooms occupation? I would have thought the daughter of a 'gentleman' was likely to marry a man who could sign his name? And surely he would have spoken enough English to have courted and asked her to marry? Or did she speak Italian? 30 years old may mean he was married before, or he was serving in the army? or that he was too poor to support a wife? May be some of the more experienced people on here will help you if you put more info on the thread. Where and when did they marry?

I have an ancestor who was a retired plumber but on his daugter's marriage cert he is described as 'gentleman'. I know plumber's are supposed to make a lot of money ....but! I think he was just a bit pretentious! Anne

Hi all.I was told by avery old great auntThat a picture that used to hang on her wall was a picture of her mother who apparantly was an actress, and that she was at La Scarla opera house in Milan. It aws her father who's occupation was discribed as a Gentleman.and he was supposed to have been a Bow Street Magistrate.Joseph had no parents listed on the certificate.thats what I thought was unusal he was said to have come from Cremona.and his name was Croci.there are many Croci's living there now
