How do I go about finding out why someone was in prison? I have a woman who is in Hull Prison, and I want to know if she's mine, and why she's there. Interesting point of fact - she's down as a Widow, as is her 'husband'.

Hi Tracy I've just spent the afternoon in a county record office and have found a relative (not, I stress, a director ancestor!) going to prison no fewer than 6 times between 19 August 1879 and 11 October 1881. In each case it was for vagrancy, being drunk, lodging in the open air! etc. Although the records were not indexed, they were really easy to search, and details included age, height and hair colour (all of which varied rather a lot) his occupation, birthplace and whether he could read and write, as well as details of his crime and punishment.

Thanks for your replies. Penny, I just had a look through your thread - quite useful :) Brenda, I think I'll have to try that as well.
