Can anybody please tell me if the occupations of White Smith and Gun Maker are connected in any way. Also what was a Grey Cloth salesman - yes i know it speaks for itself, but why only sell Grey cloth, is it anything to do with the forces? many thanks maureen

Having looked at the occupations website: a Whitesmith is listed as a Tinmaker The other 2 are not listed Regards Sue

Grey Cloth Dealer Dealer in Grey Cloth - the unfinished product of the looms before bleaching, dyeing or printing. The term is still used in the trade

Grey cloth is still the same today - unfinished cloth which is sold on to the printers/dyers. Anne
