Gosh... thanks everybody all that is very helpful I will investigate further. Jess - re William - I am fairly certain I have the right age. Found him on 1881 census in Bristol age 71 with a daughter Mary at home and the correct age. Also found in 1851 also in Bristol so pretty certain his birth is c1810.

The Cornwall Online Census Project has put the 1841 on the internet so this might be worth a search. You can google it or go via Genuki. Janice

Well they might have married where they both happened to be at the time. In my family the couples all got married in the parishes where they were living, apart from one couple, but they appear to have settled back in the bride's parish for several years before upping sticks and going to live with the groom's widowed mother. nell

Josephine - have you joined the Devon Family History Society. Its not really expensive and they have a fantastic amount of indexes. Members are very helpful. I joined about three years ago and have received a great deal of information helping me in my research. I live in Co. Durham so all my research is via the Society or on the net. Why not check out their web site. Happy hunting. Linda

Many thanks Nell and Georgina that will be helpful. I will be looking for: William Nutt born c1810 South Molton, Devon - I have no idea who his parents or siblings were. Grace Bartlett born c1816 Launceston, Cornwall - I believe she was christened 21.1.1816 Altarnun, Cornwall and her parents may be John Bartlett and Jane Sleep married 20.2.1804 Truro, Cornwall William and Grace were married pre 1837 - their first child was also a William born c1836 in South Molton, Devon - I am hoping to find their marriage. Would they have married in her home town, which may be Altarnun, Cornwall? or would they have married in his area of Devon? which is more likely? Many thanks again Jo

If he was baptised and married in a Church of England church, it will be recorded in the parish registers. These are in the county records office and are usually on microfiche. Please check the records office will be open and have the records you want for the years you want first: www.devon.gov.uk/index/community/the_county/record_office/north_records_office.htm If you are lucky, you may find that the local family history society has indexed them. if not, its a question of starting with one church and working your way outwards in a circle checking other parishes until you find what you want. nell
