Thank you both for your responses, answers my query in relation to a marriage witness I have and trying to track them into a family - must be his sister from the 1841 census. Still doesnt help me though in relation to him having a different surname at his daughter's marriage. On hunting I go Regards Sue

When my cousin married in 1970s she checked I would have had my 18th birthday before that as I was bridesmaid and she wanted me to witness the wedding. But there was no legal age at which you could be a witness and I have several certs where relatives have signed when they were teenagers. nell

There isn't any definite age to be a witness, as long as the person is old enough to understand what is going on. Kath. x

Does anyone know the rules on how old you needed to be to a witness of a marriage? I know you had to be 21 to marry unless you had parent's permission does this also apply to witnesses, i.e. would being 18 be old enough? Regards Sue
