I'm new to family tree research, so thought I'd ask for your opinion on the following : I have a birth cert for Eliza Richey Luke which shows parents as Charles Luke and Theresa Luke formally Waterman. The only possible marriage I can trace is John Mitchell Luke to Theresa Waterman, a couple of months later. This Theresa Waterman was born in the same sub district as Eliza. Q1 Did mothers regularly put their 'new' surname and 'formally' on their children's birth certificates when in fact they weren't yet married ? Q2 Do you think it is possible that it is the same person or just a coincidence. Have checked relevant census, and connect anyone with anyone. Many thanks Liz

Hi Elizabeth You will probably find that anything is possible during your research but even if they did put their maiden/married names on babies certificate I would be surprised if John = Charles. What year are we talking about? Suzanne

Hi Elizabeth I though maybe that Charles was the father and had died and theresa maried a brother but FREEBMD does not support this theory. I have had several different situations with ancestors records. I have birth certs that say diferent names to marriage certs but they do eventually turn out to be the correct people. My advice would be to collect as much supporting evidence that you can. Censuses are usually a good one but I did not understand whether you had been successful with your census searches or not. Theresa's a widow in 1881, but I can't see a death on FamilyRelatives, which is supposed to be complete. Maybe he's just disappeared But these aren't common names. It would be totally astounding if there were two unrelated unconnected Theresa Watermans who both married Lukes. I think you really need that marriage cert. You might want a birth cert for one of the other kids as well, to see what he's called there

Suzanne, I also wondered about a brother being involved. I cannot find any connections on any of the census. Eliza was born in 1872, and Theresa 1846, both in Rayleigh, Rochford, Essex. Liz

I have two brothers who married two sisters... Could this be the case here? Sarah

Hi Elizabeth Im I agree with Robin above. I have had to order siblings certs to confirm names. If you end up doing this try to get the sibling closest in age. Wish you luck. Suzanne

Robin, Agree with you, quite unusual names. I have the marriage cert for Theresa and John. Good idea, will get birth cert for one of the other children. Thanks Liz
