Maybe he had two forenames and recorded different one's at different times. Do you have a birth cert of any of his children? Merry

Probably he's used his middle name on one of the census as a lot of my relatives seemed to do. Do you have his full name? Carol

Relatives like to do this. My husband's gt gt grandfather was called Zusman Hart, so when I found a birth index for a Hart, Zusman I sent for it confidently. There was a snag - on the birth cert it said his father was Solomon Hart, but on Zusman's marriage cert it said Zalig Hart, father. Solved mystery when I got the death cert - Solomon Zalig Hart. I also have an Eliza Ellen Broad who changed to Ellen Broad at the same time as her sister Annie changed to Elizabeth Anne. nell

And sometimes its a tired transcriber! Ive had ones with the wrong first name and if you look up a few lines on the image you can see that their eyes have wandered and written down the name wrongly.

I have a chappie who was called 'George' on his daughters' birth certificate and two census', 'John' on another census and 'James' on her marriage certificate. Definately same man. I've put it down to Irish accent confusing registrars and cenus takers! But any other suggestions welcome! Sarah
