Are there any military buffs out there who could tell me where I might be able to see a picture of an Irish Guards dress uniform, with cap badge, circa 1912? I have a picture in an old album which I believe to be my grandmother’s brother – I wasn’t aware until I started delving into this that she even had a brother – I have never heard him mentioned in my lifetime – he appears in no family wedding pictures for his sisters, so I assume he possibly died during the FWW. Anyway, this picture is in uniform and unfortunately I don’t have a scanner to be able to post it anywhere, but I have taken it to the ‘old soldiers’ at my local British Legion and they are of the opinion that it is an Irish Guards uniform. The picture is obviously sepia so I can’t tell the colour of the tunic, but the buttons are in sets of four down the front, there is what appears to be a shamrock embroidered on the side of the collar and the cap badge is an eight pointed cross with what appears to be almost a pointed ‘dome’ in the centre. If anyone has any other ideas what regiment this might be, or indeed where I might be able to find a picture to compare it too, I would be eternally gratefully. Regards Trudy |

my grandad was in the irish guards in WW2 - i don't know if the uniform was the same though, but the badge sounds exactly the same |

There's a description of Irish guards uniform and kit here: http://www.irishguards*.*net/ remove * to use, and scroll down to find it - you need to open a separate window. If you google 'Irish guards' there are lots of sites, so hopefully you will be able to find out more. nell |
