Hi. How do you use this? I have searched for a couple of ancestors, but i cant make anything out at all that might tell me if that person is related to me.

If you find something that you think is relevant you need to ask for an estimate to copy this, or you can order it and view it for free at Kew. Each estimate costs £10, the cost of copying the record is taken off that ammount, as is the postage. I have just got an estimate for a seaman's record which was £1.80 and £2.00 P&P. It would make good sense to ask for the estimate to include several items I think. If you ring up for advice they are helpful but can't tell you much more about the document than the online full description does. Helen.

Im just trying to find any of my relatives in a hope, as ive come to a bit of standstill. I have been looking for Thomas and William Elliott in the Newcastle/Durham in the 1800's. Found a couple of court hearings, but that was about it really

I found something on A2A and got in touch with the relevent record office they sent me an estitmate without any charge. I got the records I needed later. I don't know if some charge and some don't or if things have changed. Perhaps you could email them to find out. Germaine x

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 14 Aug 2005 23:01

Robyne You need to look at the top of the document you have found on A2A, it will say something like 'For further information contact Suffolk Court' or whatever. This is where that actual document is kept. You then need to get in touch with those people - sometimes they will be very helpful and tell you what you need to know without it costing you anything.A lot depends on who answers the phone! (Apply a liberal coating of charm, and try to make it sound like a fascinating mystery) I have had copies of Bastardy Orders, etc for £2. each, after being told what I wanted to know. I also had the text of a newspaper cutting for nothing. I have also found - extremely maddeningly - documents which are 'In the Private Collection of Blah, not available for viewing' - grrrrr! A2A is like a big index to what is held in archives in England. So you won't get the info from A2a but it will tell you where the item is held. nell
