I have this in formation abput my 2x g grandfather James Cox... On His daughter Mary Ann's Marriage certificate( 1881) it says he was a Blacksmith... He married Elizabeth Carston in 1856, they were living in woolwich kent. His occupation is given as smith. His Father's name was George and he was a bootmaker. From the 1861 census I have the following information : Charlotte Cox abt 1857 Greenwich, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent Elizabeth Cox abt 1833 Sydenham Wife Foots Cray Kent Elizabeth Cox abt 1859 Greenwich, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent James Cox abt 1835 Thetford, Norfolk, England Head Foots Cray Kent Mary Ann Cox abt 1860 Chiselhurst, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent I cannot find him with any real cetainty on any other census ! I cannot find his birth in Thetford ..I have trawled through Thetford registers to no avail! ANY help with this would be very much appreciated. Thanks for listening. Alice

Alice, I think they are on the 1881 (on FamilySearch) as Cock. Eliza is a widow and there are 2 more children but I think it's the right family. Janice

Hi Alice I know what its like like you cant find anything. When people go missing on censuses it is usually because of a breakup of the family for several reasons: Death,Desertion, etc. after an event like this people do tend to lie about their ages etc just to get by. I found this entry which may be your Charlotte and James Junior: Name: James Cox Age in 1881: 17 Estimated birth year: abt 1864 Relationship to head-of-household: Visitor Gender: Male Where born: Greenwich, Kent, England Address: 2 Sidney Villas Church Rd Civil parish: Teddington County/Island: Middlesex Occupation: Ship Steward Source information: RG11/0842 Registration district: Kingston Sub-registration district: Hampton Folio: 142 Page: 30 Charlotte who is on the page as Henry Barton's wife was married in June 1879 in Pancras (Maiden name Cox). There is also a death entry for an Elizabeth Cox in Greenwich Sept 1885 (age 49), this could be their mother. I searched and searched for your James senior but as you know yourself there is no sign of him but I do hope I have found something for you. Suzanne
