Thanks for that Nell, I shall have to send for the certificate. I cannot find a James on the 1841 or the 1851 census in that area, so John's marriage certificate will give me another lead. Regards, Jackie

This appears to be John's wedding ref - his father's name would be on the cert: Name: ATTWOOD, John Record Type: Marriages Quarter: December Year: 1841 District: Epping County: Essex Volume: 12 Page: 193 [also has HUTCHING, Ann] nell

Hi Monica, I hope you are right because that would solve the problem! I am waiting for a reply from Essex FHS about the parish records so that I can go back further and see if I can find a James Attwood related to John. Thank you for your opinion Regards, Jackie

John and James both appear to have been born Gt Parndon. The 2-year difference could be an error - happens on censuses, but it could also be just the difference that would make them brothers. So you would need to see if you can find James on 1841 census and/or check the Gt Parndon baptism registers to see if there are two separate entries for them. nell

On 1861 John born abt 1818 Great Parndon living at Roydon. On 1871 James born about 1820 Great Parndon living at Broadly Common and Roydon. I cannot find a death for James either. Great Parndon, Broadly Common and Roydon are all next to each other. Both John and James are down as agricultural labourers. It is such a headache! Regards, Jackie

When and where are John (on 1861) and James (1871) born? Do they have the same birth place and year, or different ones? Can you find a death for James? I think it a bit odd that if they are the same person it should have both versions of name on the son's marriage cert. My guess would be that James is either Charles' uncle or his brother. nell

I have Charles Henry Attwood's birth certificate that names his father as John Attwood, mother Ann Attwood formerly Hutchins....................I have Charles Henry Attwood's marriage certificate that names his father as John Attwood. One of the witnesses signs James Attwood...................I have John on the 1841 cencus living at Great Parndon..............I cannot find him on the 1851 census.............I have him on the 1861 census living at Great Parndon............On the 1871 census I have the family living at Broadly Common and Roydon (the next village along) but the head of the household is James Attwood..............By 1818 John's wife Ann is a widow and has one of the married daughters living with her....................I cannot find a death for John or a marriage for James between 1861 and 1871 ................... My question is could John and James be the same person? Regards, Jackie
