Ladies, thankyou for your replies. I'm still 'stumped' though. I've tried CAMDEX, they have no record of him, so I don't think he returned to Cambs. The other four, although one fits - age wise - the district has no family connection. No doubt he'll turn up one day. Thanks again. M. Steer |

Just in case he returned to Cambridgeshire you would find this site brilliant and free. www2.cambridgeshire.gov.uk Look for the CAMDEX which lists all bmd's for the county. Good luck |

Have you searched for a death between 1901 & the sons marriage?? Altho doesnt say he was deceased on the marriage cert this doesnt mean he wasnt,I have two certs where I know the father wasnt alive ,but doesnt say deceased on the certs. If the question wasnt asked when the marriage details being taken then sometimes the info wasnt volunteered. Shirley |

Margaret I don't know of any short cuts. Either you trawl through the GRO indexes, or you get look-ups in the electoral rolls of any of the places you think he was living, until he stops appearing there. I do know that the govt. have plans to computerise all the GRO indexes in the future, so hopefully it will be a quicker process one day. nell |

I've found out quite a lot about my Gt.Grandfather but I can't find out when and where he died. I'm hoping some kind and clever person out there can help - I'm sure some of you are mystics or magicians! James Saywell, born 26.12.1856 in Croxton Cambs. His first two children were born in Croxton - 1879 and 1881. He appears on 1881 Census in Croxton. His next and subsequent children were born in Finchley, London - between 1883 and 1887. He appears on the 1891, 1901 Census in Finchley. In 1907, his eldest son marries, according to the Marriage Certificate he is NOT 'deceased'. By 1910 his eldest son and other 'relatives' have moved to Glamorgan, S. Wales. Whether James went to S.Wales, stayed in London or returned to Croxton, I've no idea. I can (and will, of course) trawl through 1837 On-line but if someone has a 'short cut' I'd be very grateful. M. Steer |
