1851 confusion

just been on the 1851 sample site and downloaded the devon collection - previously i'd been told that my ancestors where on HO/107/1895 F.47 P.36 - but the samples i'm looking at are called Dev4102a etc -- can anybody enlighten me? |

The HO.... reference numbers are the references given to the census images when they were filmed for the public record office and needed to look up the films at the FRC in London and also on online sources like ancestry. The other reference is specific to the 5% sample images for Devon. Its a bit like me quoting a section of someone else's book in a book I write. The text would be the same but the book title and page numbers would be different. You'll sometimes find if you go to view censuses at a county records office that they also have their own reference numbers for the films rather than using the PRO ones. |

Don't forget that it is only a sample so you can guarantee that entry will be included. Ancestry say 10% sample but I have seen it described as 2% and 5% sample also? What part of the country are you looking for? MB |
