Have the name of my gt grandfather (Thomas Wright) from his marriage cert. This shows his father as Michael Lunt (illegitimate). I assume this means Michael is illegitimate? Can I obtain birth cert for my gt grandfather just using his fathers name as reference or do I need both parents and some other reference?

I would guess it means that Thomas was an illegitimate son of Michael, rather than that Michael was illegitimate. Unfortunately it means that Michael's name may well not be on Thomas' birth certificate, so it would not be advisable to use it as a checking reference. But if you have Thomas' name, quarter, district, volume and page number for his birth registration entry from the GRO indexes you don't have to specify any names as checking references unless you want to.
