I have the following family in 1851, in Newborough, Staffs John Copeland, b 1797, Newborough, Staffs Mary Copeland, wife, b 1801, Uttoxeter, Staffs Antonia, daug, b 1833, Newborough, Staffs Isaac, son, b 1835, Newborough, Staffs David, son b 1841, Newborough, Staffs Harriet, daug b 1844, Newborough, Staffs Thomas, son, b 1844, Newborough, Staffs At Staffs Record Office today, I found this family in 1841, again in Newborough, but transcribed what looks like 'copnale' John Copnale, aged 40 Mary, aged 40 Charles, aged 12 John, aged 9 Sydonia aged 7 (could this be Antonia?) Issac aged 5 Mary aged 3 Francis aged 2 David aged 10 months I have a strong feeling this is the same family. Have I completely lost the plot!!!! H x |

Hi Helen, I think you have the same family. Looked in 1861 and they are still in Newborough, as Copland on one page and Copeland on the next!! Same parents and David, Harriet and Thomas - are the last 2 twins? Janice |

Hi Janice, I hope it is the same family........I do believe that Thomas & Harriet were twins. Saying that, I haven't yet found their birth registration, annoyingly. I would have thought they must have been. Thomas Copeland born 1844 was my great great grandfather. I think I'll have to do a bit more studying on the Copeland's when I next visit Stafford Record Office.... Thanks for having a look for me x |

Hi Suzanne, Thanks for that. I hope he is mine. I hadn't come across that so cheers! My only worry is though it's spelt 'Frances' and not 'Francis' I always thought Frances was a female? I also thought that Newborough came under the registration district of Uttoxeter! Thanks again x |

I remembered I'd seen John Copeland in 1871 with a Francis Copeland a while ago. I've decided to have another look after getting my new findings today from Stafford. As I have a Francis Copeland (well I think it is!) with father John, in 1841, Francis is 2. I thought he'd died after Suzanne had found an entry, although I was slightly worried as it was Francis spelt the female way (Frances) Anyway, I've looked at the 1871 census again. Francis is the head of the house, aged 31yrs. John Copeland is visiting. What has thrown me is that the relationship is 'grandpa' Am I clutching at straws in thinking this is an error and should be father, and therefore Francis never did in fact die. I wonder if because John is below Francis' daughter Ann, the relationship indicates to her, in error, rather than the head. Sorry I'm waffling. I think I should be in bed! I'd appreciate any thoughts though. Cheers Helen x |
