I can't find the thread for this but can someone please remind me. Have I remembered rightly that it was illiegal to marry your brother in law until the law changed in the 1900's Thanks Elaine

I know it was to marry your sister in law, don't know if it worked the other way round though.

in 1921 a law was passed to allow a widow to marry her deceased husbands brother in 1907 a man could marry his deceased wifes sister

However it was still done before then. My grt gran married her cousin in 1893 after her 1st hubby died, &&&&& then ,when HE died, she married his elder brother in 1900,who had been married previously to HER younger sister. Wot a round robin. But she did marry her brother in law on the 3rd marriage,even tho this may not strictly have been legal Shirley

Hi Valerie. It certainly seems so!!. It took me by surprise when all was uncovered, I cant find her death or the 3rd husbands ,so am only hoping when he died she didnt go on to marry another brother!! OH My god I would be really going round in circles Shirley

Thanks everyone, am looking into something for a friend and I am sure one of the sisters marries a brother in law in 1889, even found both marriages to the same man on freebmd. Found all sorts looking for someone else, well back to my brickwall then. Elaine
