How would I find out if my Nan was a twin? Dad seems to think she was but isn't 100% sure. Any advice please?

You can look in the GRO births indexes to see if another baby with same surname was born same vol page and reg district. If your nan had a time on her birth cert that would indicate she was a twin (although not necessarily). If she was born before 1927 and her twin was stillborn there will be no record. If after 1927 it would be on the stillbirth register which is closed except to parents and siblings of the stillborn child. nell

Thanks Jess and Nell, I have her birth certificate. On the page where I found her GRO ref (on freebmd) there are lots of Collins registered in that quarter. In the same district there are two others also. My nan was called Evelyn Collins DOB 26/05/1910 (11a 805). There is another Evelyn Collins (11a 789) and an Emlyn Collins (11a 777) but I'm not sure if either of these was her twin. Any advise please? I have subscription to ancestry but cant find either of them. Thanks again , Tina

If there was a live twin it would have the same reference or 11a 804 or 11a 806 if your Nan was the first or last entry on that page.

Thanks Janet, that clears up that mystery for me. Dad must be wrong. But maybe there were other siblings that were twins. hmmmmmm looks like more searching.

For a twin, there was *normally* a time of birth as well as date.
