Hi all, I have a marriage cert for my G Gfather who was married at The Parish Church, Castleford in 1906. I have googled this and come up with various churches in Castleford, but none called the Parish Church. So I am thinking that it could have changed it's name and now be called All Saints, Castleford. Could anyone please tell me if this is right? And also is there a graveyard there? I'm thinking of going to try to find some of my elusive rellies graves. thanks Misty x |

The Church of England divides it's diocese (an area overseen by a bishop) into parishes. In the old days, one C of E parish would have one C of E church serving the community, except in large towns and cities where you might get several C of E churches per parish. Once you get past the mid 1800's though there are quite often more churches built within a parish. However, as the certificate you mention just says, ''The Parish Church'' that suggests that at that date there was only one C of E church at that time in Castleford. All C of E churches are Dedicated to a Saint(s) when they are consecrated. So the parish Church for Castleford was named All Saints when it was built, but the vicar refered to it as The Parish Church rather than by it's name. (A bit like saying, I bought my groceries from ''the grocers shop'', rather than saying from ''Tesco'') Hope that explains? MMM |

There probably is a graveyard but not everyone payed for a stone and some will have been moved/damaged etc. Your best bet would be to phone the County Record Office for ummmm, where's Castleford?? West Yorks?? and ask them if they have a list of Monumental Inscriptions for All Saints Castleford?? This is a listing of the gravestones at a particular date. Sometimes the lists were made up decades ago so the stones recorded may not still be there, but you will have the details from the MI's. Good Luck! MMM |

The Parish Church is all Saints, Church st. Castleford. I can see it from my house! There is only a small graveyard. Castleford has an unusualy high number of churches (there is another one opposite my house). The main cemeterys are on Healdfield Road and at Whitwood. Cas is not a big place so not hard to get around. Bob |

Wow! Thanks Ann that was very kind of you. I have never been able to find the batch numbers before, so now I can have fun trying them on my earlier lines :) Unfortunately I’m stuck at 1906 on my Edwards side. There are too many of them and they were all miners! Thankyou Bob. I don’t live very far from Castleford myself, so hubby said he will take me when the cricket has finished. LOL Three of my familys lived there in the early 1900s so I should be able to find something. Thankyou both again Misty x |
