I've just found out that one of my anecestors (Thomas RAMSEY) was a police constable in the Westminster area of London in 1865 - I've even got his officer number. Does anyone know where I might be able to find any records relating to him?

Debbie, In last months Family Tree Magazine (August, Vol 21, No. 9) there is a good article on the Metropolitan Police. Gives a list of where to get information. Derek

If he was in the Met his files will be at Kew. You can find his service record quickly if you have his warrant number from police-orders, but if he's not on the database, you can still get his warrant from microfilm at Kew. The service records are arranged in warrant number order in large ledger-type books and give physical description, place and date of birth, previous employer etc. If he stayed till retirement, you can also get his pension details - how much his final salary was, his pension per year, where it was to be paid and whether he was married and had children. nell
