I have John aged 50 and Mary aged 45 ....daughter Mary is 25...son Henry is 13 ...and daughter Jane is 9......Would you say that John... Mary and first daughter had their ages rounded up/down and the other kids didn't....Or would you say that all the ages are what they told the enumerator.....ALSO...when they rounded ages ...was it up or down....I think I've just confused myself!!!....Sue xx |

Sue I think children under 15 showed the correct age and everyone else was rounded down - it depended on the enumerator or it could have been that they WERE those actual ages of course! Debby |

Officially those over 15 had their ages rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5, children under 15 had exact ages BUT some enumerators gave exact ages for everyone, some rounded children's ages, some got it wrong and rounded up. Your family look as if they obey the official practice though (unless later census prove otherwise?). |

The instructions were quite clear i.e. '20 years and under 25 write 20, 25 years and under 30 write 25' so they must have been thick or lax to round up! you can see the actual instructions here.. http://www.hunimex*com/warwick/census/1841_enum_inst.html Bob |
