How to find a birth?

Can anyone help me please? Up to now all my relatives have been researched through Scotlands People but I have come across a Census return for Ann Jane Hughes in 1891 in Glasgow age 22 living with her brother and family, Henry age 26. They are both listed as born England. She married and died in Glasgow but how do I go about researching her birth? Going by the census return her date of birth would be about 1869 and her brother about 1865. The details on her marriage cert list her parents as Henry Hughes and Mary MS McLaughlin. Family legend has her coming from Consett Co.Durham but I'm not sure this is fact. Would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks, Linda

i'd look on previous (english) censuses to see if you can find them there - once with a birthplace you can take look up the refernce on the GRO i'll have a look round on ancestry for you

Thanks for your replies Louise. That Liverpool Census looks promising. Can you tell me how to access it and how do you check the GRO? As I mentioned I've only searched in Scotland so far so don't really know how to go about searching English records. Thanks for your help. Linda

Linda England/Wales censuses 1861-1901 are on Ancestry - you can subscribe for a quarter/year OR pay per view. 1881 census is free on www.familysearch.org - transcription only. The images are available on ancestry. 1861 census is also available (not all counties yet) on www*1837online*com. 1837online [replace * with .] also has the GRO indexes and again is pay per view. Freebmd (gooogle 'freebmd' to find) has a lot of bmds and is free, but stops at about 1910. BUT - and this is the bad news - unlike Scotland, you can't see the image of the certificate online. All you will get is a reference, which will be the year, quarter, reg. district, volume & page number. This is the GRO reference which you can use to order the cert, and get the info on it. Order online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ nell
