what is a tan man?

Can anyone tell me what tan man is - it is entered as occupation in 1923 on rellies marriage cert? thank you

It could apply to someone who works in a Hide Tannery who's job it was to tan the hides,,,,Tanner, Would here have been such a place where he lived or married? kay,

Sounds like a 'hunky' bronzed 'Chippendale' to me, but I would go with the leather worker . Dea x

Just looked in Old Occupations 2 suggestions there - TAN BARK STRIPPER - Collected tree bark used for tanning leather ( - 'Stripper' -there comes the 'Chippendale' connection again!) TANNER - Tanned (cured) animal hides for leather making. Dea x

:-), Chippendale sounds fun, probably not approved of then tho! The area they lived was hereford and at one point he was a farm labourer too, so thanks gus and gals for your help.
