Hi Brenda no, i dont have that name from anywhere. All i have is a William Elliott, born about the right time in the right area. Father is Thomas as stated on his marriage cert, then in 1871 i have found someone who looks like him with a father thomas and Ann as mother. I just looked up marriages around that time for an Ann and Thomas. How likely is it for Census info to be out 2 years? I know the info in 1891 is correct, as it has his wifes and childrens names that i know of as right. but his birth there is 1853, in the 1871 census and what looks like the birth Linda found he was born in 1855? p.s, will be emailing you later as i have news!

Hi Linda yes that sounds like him. In the 1871 census he is living in Byker with his dad (45) and mum (43). Im pretty sure its them as on Williams marriage cert his dad is listed as a Striker, and in 1871 he is there as a blacksmith. Also the marriage was in Byker as is their address in 1871. Had a bit of a fright though as there is another william with a dad thomas, who was born in Durham too. Actually, as a question, would a marriage Cert state the persons middle name? as on the marriage cert he is just William Elliott, but in the 1871 census he is William Thomas.

Hi Robyne When Freebmd is working properly, it has coverage charts to show what has been transcribed. From memory, births in the 1860s are badly served. This is probably because the indexes are handwritten and the digital images are difficult to read. It may be worth your while looking at 1837Online or the fiche at a local library. Also, you don't say where you get the surname Lumley from? If it is off a certificate, there is always the possibility that the mother married Thomas Elliott as a widow ie under a different surname, but this is not reflected on the birth certificate as it should be. Alternatively, if the wife's mother is with the family on one of the censuses, SHE may have remarried as a widow. Most of our ancestors had no consideration for their descendants!

Have also found an entry for a William Elliott born in Haltwhistle in Northumberland to an Ann Elliott on 9/3/1855. Is this your relative? How old are Thomas and Ann on the 1871 census and where exactly were they living? It may not be much help but you never know.

oh blimey, it just gets worse! i have found their daughter Margaret's baptism in 1863, cant yet find the birth certs for either her, William or their brother David. Once i have that i can confirm who the mystery woman is!

Robyn - On the Familysearch.org website there is a record of a Thomas Elliott marrying an Ann Steel on 24/7/1853 in Gateshead and the one already mentioned of a marriage to Ann Brown on 19/10/1851 in St Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne. These are the only 2 records I can find for the 1850's in the Newcastle area.

Hi Robyne Think you might have to order the cert - can't think of another way you can 'prove' you have the right one. Trudy

Im not at all confident on Ann Lumley, ive just searched for a thomas Elliott marrying an Ann around the early 1850's as this is when one of my distant grandparents was born. I have tried having a look on Ancestry 1851 census, but cant find anything for my thomas yet. Where else could i look to find this? i think it probably is going to be the case of getting the birth cert of William to see what his mothers maiden name was, but im trying to avoid spending too many pennies at the mo!!!

Have you checked if Thomas was married to Ann in 1861 as well as 1871? Did they have children? It might be safer to get a birth cert of one of the children to confirm. (I know, more money lol) Sarah

Just thinking - do you know where your Thomas would have been for the 1851 census, if you can find him and either of the 'Anns' it might answer the question for you.

Hi Robyne Don't know how confident you are about the 'Lumley' but the only one I can find on LDS is a Thomas Elliott who married an Ann Brown at St Nicholas Newcastle-uon-Tyne, 19th October 1851 Hope this helps. Trudy

Hi, I know that in the 1871 census Thomas Elliott is married to Ann Elliott, in Newcastle. Could someone please confirm that he married an Ann Lumley in 1852 in Gateshead. On the same page there is another Anne, who could also be the one he married. thanks very much
